This is a technique for machining polygon shapes on a CNC lathe without a Y-axis.
Multiple cutters are attached to an axial rotary tool, and the cutters and workpiece are rotated in sync at a 2:1 ratio.
Technical details

Three cutters can machine hexagon shapes while four cutters can machine octagon shapes.
It is possible to achieve the surface finish required for JIS Grade B and C (JIS B 1021) standards, such as for the flat surfaces for hexagonal bolts and hexagonal nuts.
- Note: Because the cutting path of the cutters forms a long ellipse as viewed from the workpiece, achieving a precise flat surface is difficult. Please verify the required accuracy before using.
